Using tilt-shift effects to create a miniature-effect is a newer &quot;gimmick&quot; effect of lenses or cameras that have such capabilities.  It&#039;s more frequently used to straighten out the perspective of architectural photos (so walls don&#039;t get closer together higher up) or for landscape photographs where everything is in focus.

Here&#039;s a video clip done with a tilt-shift lens:
