This week has been rough. I was in Philadelphia all of last week, and my flight home arrived at LAX on Sunday night. I’ve been recovering from my trip ever since.

While I was back east, I went to Camp Bisco (for the 4th year in a row) with a bunch of friends. I had an absolute blast… Perhaps I had too much fun? I’m not sure, but my body is covered in some sort of hive/rash thing. It’s slowly but surely spreading, and as of today it’s on my face. My eye is all swollen up. Awesome. WebMD, what’s going on?

This is fantastic, too, because I just got over the most ferocious case of poison ivy/oak/whatever that I’ve ever had in my life. That came to me compliments of some hiking in Monterey, CA. I probably leaked enough pus from that to fill a bathtub. Who’s hungry?

Anyway, Camp Bisco was a blast, as usual. Definitely some of the most fun I’ve had all year, despite an insane lightning storm (with tornado warnings) that brought the music to a screeching halt on Saturday afternoon. Brothers Past were about 20 minutes into their set when the death clouds rolled in, and the music was interrupted with a stern warning to “return to your cars and seek shelter immediately”. Another camera was ruined in the process. That’s number 3 this year, which actually isn’t too shabby considering my track record.

I doubt many of you are into The Disco Biscuits, but if you’re interested, I got some halfway decent videos. This one is my favorite (especially right around 8:16) and there are more here, here, etc. I also got some footage of Ween, LCD Soundsystem, and more… Check ‘em out in my YouTube account if you’re interested.

Alright, I need to get back to scratching myself like a crackhead.

The Coachella music festival is quickly approaching. This is my first year going to this particular festival, but I’ve been to more than my share of music festivals in the past… Enough to know that I won’t end up seeing even half of the bands that I wanna see.

Why? It just isn’t possible. Half the fun of a music festival is partying in the camping area, and pregaming for the big acts. That being said, here are the bands I’d like to see each day. I’ve got a few schedule conflicts in there, nothing too crazy though.

Friday: Baroness, Deer Tick (?), Avett Brothers, Yeasayer, Aeroplane, Dillinger Escape Plan, Them Crooked Vultures (?), Grizzly Bear, LCD Soundsystem, Fever Ray, Deadmau5 (or Jay-Z)

Saturday: Porcupine Tree, Old Crow Medicine Show, Beach House, the XX (or Coheed & Cambria), Faith No More, MGMT (?), Muse, Flying Lotus (or Les Claypool, or The Dead Weather… Crap), Die Antwoord, Tiesto (?)

Sunday: Rusko, De La Soul (or The Glitch Mob, or Jonsi), Spoon (or Phoenix, or Miike Snow, or Infected Mushroom… Crap), Orbital (or Pavement), Thom Yorke (or Plastikman), Gorillaz

If you’re bored, take a look at the lineup and let me know if you think I’m missing out on any must-see acts, as there are quite a few on there that I’ve never heard before.

This is the first festival that I’ve attended where camping passes were sold separately from the festival passes. I slacked on buying one, and they sold out. Within hours, people were selling the camping passes on eBay for $700-800. I lucked out and found someone on Twitter who sold me hers for $50… So hopefully that isn’t fake. She seemed nice enough. I suppose I’ll find out in 2 days…

Festival season is upon us!

I’m sure that at this point, this is the 5000th blog post to be made on the subject, but I don’t care. The lineup for this year’s Coachella Music Festival has made its way online. I’ve checked out lineups in the past, but since I was living on the east coast, I never paid too much attention… I was always happy with the Bonnaroos, Rothburys, Camp Biscos, etc. But with Indio being a 2 hour drive from where I am in LA, this is very doable, and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna have to go.

The highlights from the initial lineup (in my opinion) are: Faith No More, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Gorillaz, Orbital, Aeroplane, Baroness, Grizzly Bear, Phoenix, LCD Soundsystem, Yeasayer, Coheed & Cambria, Muse, Les Claypool, Mew, Porcupine Tree, Old Crow Medicine Show, Flying Lotus, Beach House, Julian Casablancas, Infected Mushroom, Deadmau5, The Specials, Fever Ray, The Avett Brothers, Hot Chip, the XX, Camera Obscura, Tokyo Police Club, Pretty Lights, Edwin Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Portugal the Man, Miike Snow, The Glitch Mob, and Rusko.

Faith No More and Gorillaz alone are almost enough to get me to go. Both seem like once-in-a-lifetime opportunities… And Faith No More is one of my all-time favorite bands.

Anyway, you can see the full lineup here. Having been to the Indio Polo Grounds before (for Phish’s Festival 8), I know how awesome this place is. So yeah, I’m most likely going to this. Anyone else excited about the lineup, and considering going?

So Festival 8 was amazing. I had a great time there, and going to a music festival in an RV was a cool thing to experience as well.

Most music festivals have bands playing all day, starting around 11 or 12 and going until the late hours of the night. While this is cool, it also makes for some crappy situations. You don’t get much time to hang out at your campsite and explore the festival grounds, and you (or at least I do) get anxiety about schedule conflicts or bands that you’ve missed. That was not the case with Festival 8. Since Phish was the only (official) band playing, we had plenty of time to mess around in the campsites, pregaming in the RV and hanging out with people we met over the course of the weekend.

I may have mentioned before that this Festival took place over Halloween weekend. I didn’t really have any costume plans when I left for Indio. We stopped in a Target on the way, and lo and behold, 3 Ghostbusters costumes were left in the Halloween aisle. There were 4 of us going, but we snagged them up immediately, and it worked out perfectly.

The costumes went over very well; it seemed like every 2-3 minutes someone stopped us for a picture, and I heard people sing the Ghostbusters theme song about 500 times on Halloween night. Coming up with new lyrics to the song while walking around and being obnoxious was a lot of fun as well. Tens of thousands of people, many of them dressed up in ridiculous costumes, everyone in great moods (because most of them were there to see their favorite band) – All in all, it made for what was quite possibly my favorite Halloween yet.

A ton of ridiculous things happened over the course of the weekend, but one thing in particular stands out to me. We were getting ready to leave our RV for the night, so we were all dressed up in our Ghostbusters suits, proton packs and all. The plan was to swing by our friend’s RV, which was located in the King Crimson campgrounds, at least a mile and a half from us. So we got our stuff together and started to walk in that direction.

There were a lot of golf carts cruising around, and while we joked around about stealing one, I don’t think any of us actually planned on doing it. Whenever one flew past us we’d ask for a ride, not really expecting much.

About 5 minutes into our walk, I looked up and saw that my friends were getting onto the back of a golf cart. I didn’t think much of it – I hopped on the back with them. Two Mexican guys that looked like they were in their mid 30′s were driving, and 4 of us were on the back – 2 seated, and 2 sort of squatting while hanging off of the back. I was excited that we were getting a free ride, but didn’t think much of it at first. I just held on with one hand while drinking my beer with the other.

Brooke, a girl that was with us, started making conversation with the guys driving. I wasn’t paying much attention at first, but noticed that she started questioning them, and the tone of her voice sounded more and more suspicious. At one point, she said “you guys aren’t here to see Phish, are you?” I was trying to get her to calm down, as I was unsure why she was asking questions. The drivers were pretty quite, and I had just assumed they were on mushrooms or something, since they didn’t speak much and just laughed amongst themselves.

As we continued to cruise around it became clear that they didn’t work there, nor were they there to see the band. So we’re on a stolen golf cart, no big deal. I did my best to convince everyone that we were fine, especially since we weren’t the ones that stole it. Before I knew it, we were off the festival grounds, and driving down an actual road. I was okay with this, because I thought I knew where they were taking us… We re-entered the festival grounds at another entrance about a quarter mile down the road. The fact that not a single security person even questioned what we were doing was pretty funny, because the guys definitely seemed unsure where they were going, laughing nervously between the two of them while we speculated what was going on in the back.

I looked up and noticed that the gate we were driving towards said “ARREST/BOOKING”. I laughed nervously and told everyone that it was cool, though I wasn’t sure that it was. If these guys were cops, they would have had no reason to arrest us, let alone trick us and take us to some arrest area, so I held on tight. The gate to this area was closed and guarded by a cop. He asked the driver, “Indio PD?” The driver nodded, and without a second thought the cop opened the gate and let us through.

Inside this area were at least 50 parked police cars, and some RVs that were probably for detaining people. Every vehicle in the gate was police or security. They let us through the gate on the other side in the same manner, casually asking if we were Indio PD, “yes sir”. After we were about 15 feet from the police area, the guys driving looked at each other and shared one of those half nervous/half triumphant “holy shit!” laughs.

We continued on down another back road. Everyone on this road had press passes of some sort around their necks or were some sort of staff/security – It was clear to me that this was another restricted area. The road that we were on intersected a busy road with a lot of foot traffic on it, and there was another gate in front of us, presumably to keep the people from the busy road out of this restricted area. When we got to the gate, the guy told us to wait a minute, and then mumbled some stuff into his walkie talkie. This made me kind of nervous. He then proceeded to stop all of the foot traffic so that he could open 2 gates (the one in front of us, and the one on the other side of the busy road) to let us through.

We continued on down a few more “private roads” in a similar manner until we made it to the girl’s RV. We invited the guys who were driving to come in for drinks, and they didn’t seem interested at all. We convinced them to come in for a shot, and then Brooke got the story out of them. They were there solely to steal golf carts. They snatched them up, took them off of the festival grounds, and loaded them into a truck. 3 grand a piece. This blew my mind, and it certainly explained a lot. I also noticed that the front of the golf cart said “Indio Police”, which explains why we weren’t denied access or questioned at any point.

The guys took off pretty quickly, but I couldn’t stop thinking about what happened. If they were stealing police golf carts, why did they pick us up? Wouldn’t they want to keep a low profile? Driving around with 3 beer drinking ghostbusters and a girl hanging off of the back of your golf cart certainly isn’t low-pro, although considering the circumstances I suppose it’s not that abnormal either… Stuff like that was going on all weekend. Maybe the guys weren’t too bright? Who knows – We were the ones paying at least $300 each to be there, while they were making money there. Regardless, it made for a great start to an amazing night.

It’s also worth mentioning that I saw these guys again at about 4:00 am on Monday morning. I was walking back to our RV and they drove past me. It was pretty quiet at that point, but as they approached an intersection, I heard the driver quietly tell the passenger to “chill out”. So they were doing this all weekend long… I wonder how much they made?

On another note… I was given a MacBook for work, and I’m still not 100% used to working in the Snow Leopard environment. I erased my camera’s SD cards on the MacBook before I left, but apparently since I didn’t empty the recycle bin, the files were never really erased. So when I ran out of room on a 16 GB SD card after taking like 50 pictures, I was pretty confused. I didn’t realize that the files still existed on the card and were just “hidden” until I got back from Indio. Anyway, you can check out my pictures from the festival here.

I also put together a compilation of some of the videos that I took at Festival 8:

Anyway, I think that this post makes up for my lack of reporting on Rothbury and Camp Bisco earlier this summer.

A friend of mine talked me into going to this Phish festival over Halloween weekend. It’s in Indio at the Empire Polo Field, the same spot where Coachella is held every year… And we’re going in an RV.

I’ve never seen Phish before, but I’m really looking forward to it – Not so much looking forward to seeing the band as I am to go to another festival, especially over Halloween weekend.

I’ve done my share of music festivals over the past few years, and over time I’ve learned what sort of things you need to make your camp setup perfect, or close to it. I’ve accumulated some pretty awesome stuff (ez-up, camp hammock, etc) but unfortunately all of those things are back home in Pennsylvania. But regardless, I’ve never done a festival in an RV before. I actually enjoy “roughing it” (if you could call it that) in a tent, but having a bed to sleep in and a real shower (as opposed to a long sink/trough or a jug of cold water) should be pretty sweet.

Phish is going to cover an entire album at this festival. They put out a list of 100 albums (most of which can be downloaded here), and have been eliminating a few albums every day. There are only a handful of albums remaining:

David Bowie – Hunky Dory

Genesis – The Lambs Lie Down On Broadway

Jimi Hendrix – Electric Ladyland

King Crimson – Larks’ Tongues In Aspic

MGMT – Oracular Spectacular

Michael Jackson – Thriller

Prince – Purple Rain

Radiohead – Kid A

The Rolling Stones – Exile on Main Street

Out of those albums, I think that Michael Jackson or Radiohead would be the best. I’m not really familiar with the Genesis and David Bowie albums.

Anyway, it’s pretty cool, and I’m sure this will be an awesome weekend regardless of how that ends up panning out. I kind of feel bad that I’m skipping out on Halloween in LA, and I’m sure my friends will end up having a blast here (we were all going to dress up as the same Ninja Turtle, Michaelangelo), but I feel like this has potential to be pretty damn awesome. I almost typed ‘epic’ there, but then I got douche chills.

I’m leaving work a little early today, and they’re picking me up in the RV. I’m not nearly as prepared for this as I would be if I was at home, but I’m still really looking forward to it. I’m lame and don’t have a costume prepared, but hopefully I will be able to throw something together at the last minute… Or I’ll default to that lame orange shirt – If you know me in real life, you know what I’m talking about. Hope everyone has a great weekend, and if any of you have kids, I hope that you aren’t falling for this “Trunk or Treat” crap.

I was going to take the sarcastic approach and make a post along the lines of…

“I just got back from this year’s Gathering of the Juggalo’s, and man was it awesome! I only got stabbed once, and my homie KrustyWill hooked me up with free meth all weekend long! Check out my pictures here!“

But I think this is worth a second look. I was already aware of the Insane Clown Posse “scene” (I’ve most likely posted about them before), but the pictures (and video!) from this event just blow my mind. I came across the pictures on a forum a few days ago, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about them. I’m not a fan of the music, but everyone likes different stuff… No problem there. The thing is, every single person in attendance (based on those pictures) looks like a methed-out circus freak… And that is putting it nicely.

There was a time (back in 7th/8th grade I believe?) that I actually liked ICP. It was probably just the shock value of the music, but I still remember some of the songs, and they aren’t horrible. If I was hearing them now for the first time, sure, I’d hate them. But you know how that works… Music you liked way back in the day doesn’t sound bad to you now, even if you never listen to it anymore.

Anyway, I’m getting off topic here – What is it about this particular type of music that draws such a trashy, seemingly inbred crowd? Bands that fall into a unique niche tend to have their own unique followings (with The Disco Biscuits being another example of this), but the following of the Insane Clown Posse (and all of the other Psychopathic Records artists) are the most puzzling to me. I’m sure there are exceptions to the rule, but… Come on! I really don’t know what else to say.

If you didn’t watch that first video (“highlights” of the Gathering of the Juggalos”) that I linked to above… It really is worth checking out.

I never in a million years thought that I would be linking to Insane Clown Posse videos on YouTube from this site. It’s funny how that works. Anyway, I’m gonna go pick up a down-ass jugalette and kick back with some Faygo. MMFWCL.

In the apartment where I’m currently living, I have a “loft” style bed in my room that I built with my Dad. It’s bigger and not as tall as the bed in the example pic, but I suppose that information isn’t relevant. Anyway, at some point last night I was having this very vivid dream where someone was setting up booby traps for me, and I was narrowly escaping them. I woke up at one point and sat up in my bed. I must have still been half dreaming, because it dawned on me that my bed was actually some sort of platform attached to a wall above a pit, most likely bottomless or with Mortal Kombat-style spikes at the bottom. If someone would hit a switch, the bed would fold into the wall and I’d fall to my death into the pit below. Anyway, the reason I’m posting this story is because I woke up on my floor this morning. I remember climbing down from my bed at some point last night and then realizing it wasn’t time to get up for work, but it didn’t dawn on me until later why I was sleeping on my floor with a bunch of blankets and pillows. I have a futon in my room too, maybe that was involved in the dream as well? Who knows… I have a lot of strange dreams, but it’s not often that they have an influence on my actions… That I’m aware of, anyway.

Who sells condoms at a yard sale? Very strange… Maybe if you can pick up a pikachu at the same yard sale you can make a day of it?

Have you ever heard of psychedelic black metal? Me neither. I’ve gotta say it piqued my interest though, and apparently that is how A Forest Of Stars describe themselves. You can download their only release, “The Corpse of Rebirth”, here. I haven’t listened yet, so don’t be pissed at me if it sucks. I actually don’t like most black metal, so there is a good chance that I’m gonna hate this.

I went to see Dredg on Wednesday night. I’ve liked these guys for a while (I’d say 3-4 years) but never got around to seeing them live. They put on an awesome show – I was really impressed. They were opening up for the RX Bandits, who don’t get a link because they kinda suck. The majority of the people at the show were there for the Bandits actually, and soon after they came on I noticed a mosh pit forming. Not your standard punk show pit though… This was the friendliest mosh pit that I’ve ever seen (the least friendly mosh pit was at a Dying Fetus show). I’m pretty sure there was a rainbow coming right out of the middle of this thing. After the show, I was walking back to my car and for whatever reason I grabbed a copy of Philadelphia Weekly. To my surprise, the cover story was all about Camp Bisco. I had just gotten back from (my third) Camp Bisco two weekends prior. Anyway, I checked out the article online, and noticed that they used one of my videos from Camp Bisco on the second page of the article. Pretty cool. The article itself kinda sucks though… It makes Camp Bisco sound like a glorified drug festival of the worst kind (which I suppose it sort of is) and all of it’s attendees sound like drugged-out zombies (only half of them are, myself not included). What self-respecting festival goer pees on his own tent and then sleeps in it anyway?

I hate to admit it, but I text while driving… A lot. I’m damn good at it too. I’m actually better at it then I am at this game, which attempts to simulate it.

This guy has too much time on his hands, but the results are pretty damn cool.

That’s all I’ve got now. I’m super busy with work and don’t really have time to be posting this at all (I’ve been piecing it together slowly but surely over the past few days) but I couldn’t allow my site to go for a full month without a half-decent (!?!) post. Anyway, I hope to summarize Camp Bisco and Rothbury sometime soon. Have a great weekend.

Have had zero time for this site lately, super busy with work. Six months ago, I found myself going home from work almost every night of the week. Lately though, it seems I’ve had something going on every night. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I feel like I’m constantly running around. Anyway, I’m taking a break from working on laying out newsletters and thought I’d post that I am heading to Rothbury after work today. I could probably make an entire post just bitching about creating newsletters… Different email clients all render certain HTML elements differently, some ignore certain tags altogether, and you have to use HTML tables because CSS positioning is largely ignored… I feel like I’m creating websites circa 1995, and in that regard it definitely blows. Did you know that Outlook 2007 uses MS Word (not even Internet Explorer, which in this case would actually be great) to render HTML? What kind of sense does that make!?!

Anyway, This is the 2nd year of the festival, and it’s also the 2nd year I’m going… And I can’t wait. Come on clock! In the meantime, the life of a nail is pretty damn cool. I’ll try to make some time to post about the festival when I get back. Have an awesome July 4th weekend, I’m pretty sure I will.

Can someone explain to me what’s going on here? Take a few minutes and read some of these threads. I’m not sure I can believe that this is real. It seems like an elaborate joke by 4chan or something. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve accepted Obama as my personal savior and all, but these people are beyond fanatical. I’ve already seen a lot of people acting like he’s the Messiah, but this just takes it one step further. Can this possibly be real?

While I’m asking questions to no one in particular, what’s going on with Twitter? I signed up in early 2007 after noticing some buzz about the site. Signs indicated that it had potential to be the next big thing, but after messing with it (albeit briefly) I just couldn’t get into it. I suppose I understand the appeal, but it didn’t do anything for me. Anyway, over the last month or so, it seems like Twitter has absolutely blown up. I only know a few people personally that use it, but it’s all over the media. Every TV show seems to have one. Businesses are embracing it (I convinced my company we needed one for reputation management/customer interaction and created one) and I feel like I see it/hear about it everywhere I go. Can anyone pinpoint what triggered this? I don’t think the site has changed much since I originally signed up, so why did it take so long for people to embrace it? For the record, I still think it’s as lame as I did on day one. That being said, you can follow me here: w00t. What’s does the word ‘hypocrite’ mean? As you can see, I’m trying to embrace it.

Finally, a trailer for Where The Wild Things Are. That looks awesome. I loved this book as a kid, so I can’t wait to check it out.

I checked out Friendly Fires (and White Lies) at the First Unitarian last night… Pretty good show. I love going to that place, it’s pretty small and intimate, and you can bring beer in with you. It’s awesome to catch bands there before they get too big to play in venues of that size. Friendly Fires is what you could call a guilty pleasure for me. They’re very poppy, but the songs are catchy as hell. I can’t help but like them.

So Bonnaroo just made a bunch of additions to their lineup… Notably Dillinger Escape Plan, MURS, Passion Pit, High on Fire, Shadows Fall, and Public Enemy. They also added a bunch of comedians, though the only one’s I care about are Michael Ian Black & Michael Showalter. I can’t believe that High on Fire and DEP were added, I think that’s awesome. It’s definitely cool that they’re broadening their horizons. I really hope that Rothbury follows suite and adds some decent metal (let’s forget that Shadows Fall is on there for now) because I already got my ticket.

Well let’s see… Not much else worth mentioning has happened recently. My phone got run over by a car over the weekend… Yep. I did manage to keep that phone for almost an entire year though, so that’s got to be some kind of record for me. I pay insurance on my phone every month for this exact reason. Anyway, I went to the Verizon store on Sunday and they still wanted $50 for a replacement phone, and they’re gonna give me the exact same crappy model (the VX8350). So I decided to protest this by not getting a new phone. But then I realized that I’m still paying for service, but I have no phone to use it on, so Verizon wins. I broke down and ordered a new phone today… Lame.

I only have a second here to post, but I just wanted to make note that the initial 2009 Bonnaroo lineup has been posted on the official site. A lot of the bands on there were rumored to be there for the past month or so (especially Phish and Springsteen) but I’m most surprised to see Down on there. They are one of my all-time favorite bands, and I always thought that they should play Bonnaroo, but never thought I’d see it happen. Then they put Mastodon and The Sword on the lineup last year. Still can’t believe that Down is playing Bonnaroo, I’m actually tempted to go again this year (though I always assumed I would never go back) but I’ll have to see the Rothbury lineup, since I had much more fun there than I ever did at ‘Roo. Anyway, that’s all, gotta get ready for work.
