If I had access to a super expensive video camera that was capable of recording at 1000 frames per second, I’d like to think that I’d come up with some pretty creative stuff to film. Everything looks cool in slow motion. Some stuff sounds cool, too.

Some band called the Dancing Pigeons (and some dude named Tomas Mankovsky) shot a music video with a Phantom slow motion camera. They also had access to a fire extinguisher… And a flame thrower. Good work, guys.

Camp Bisco 9 & My Current Bill Of Health

This week has been rough. I was in Philadelphia all of last week, and my flight home arrived at LAX on Sunday night. I’ve been recovering from my trip ever since.

While I was back east, I went to Camp Bisco (for the 4th year in a row) with a bunch of friends. I had an absolute blast… Perhaps I had too much fun? I’m not sure, but my body is covered in some sort of hive/rash thing. It’s slowly but surely spreading, and as of today it’s on my face. My eye is all swollen up. Awesome. WebMD, what’s going on?

This is fantastic, too, because I just got over the most ferocious case of poison ivy/oak/whatever that I’ve ever had in my life. That came to me compliments of some hiking in Monterey, CA. I probably leaked enough pus from that to fill a bathtub. Who’s hungry?

Anyway, Camp Bisco was a blast, as usual. Definitely some of the most fun I’ve had all year, despite an insane lightning storm (with tornado warnings) that brought the music to a screeching halt on Saturday afternoon. Brothers Past were about 20 minutes into their set when the death clouds rolled in, and the music was interrupted with a stern warning to “return to your cars and seek shelter immediately”. Another camera was ruined in the process. That’s number 3 this year, which actually isn’t too shabby considering my track record.

I doubt many of you are into The Disco Biscuits, but if you’re interested, I got some halfway decent videos. This one is my favorite (especially right around 8:16) and there are more here, here, etc. I also got some footage of Ween, LCD Soundsystem, and more… Check ‘em out in my YouTube account if you’re interested.

Alright, I need to get back to scratching myself like a crackhead.

Donkey Lips – The Rapper?

Remember Michael Bower, aka “Donkey Lips” from Nickelodeon’s Salute Your Shorts? Did you know that he’s a rapper? Check out some of his hot tracks here. I wish he had more than 2 songs… Because both are absolutely amazing.

According to his Wikipedia entry, he’s led quite an interesting life so far. At one point, he was a scientologist. He has a passion for saving llamas. He’s an Eagle scout… And in 2009, he entered rehab for PCP addiction.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted on here. I’ve been spreading myself pretty thin lately. The past 2 weekends in a row I’ve had friends visiting from out of town, and this coming weekend I’ll be flying back east for a fishing trip with some friends from college. This is the 3rd year in a row that we’re doing this… Fishing in Wachapreague, VA. The town has 1 bar, zero grocery stores, very spotty cell phone service… Exactly what I need.

It’s Tuesday… So you know what that means, right? Cowboy Monkey Rodeo Night! Whoooo! I’m pretty sure I can’t top that video, so I’m just gonna quit while I’m ahead.

A collaboration between guitarists Omar R. Lopez (The Mars Volta) and John Frusciante (now ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers) recorded in ’04-’05 has finally been released. Yesterdays post about Brokencyde was a weak attempt on my part as an April Fool’s joke. That band is awful.

I do find it kind of funny that I react so negatively to that music, when in actuality it’s no worse than all of the other mass produced pop garbage out there. Some kids took the “crunk”/hip-hop sound an added a “screamo” twist to it, which in its own way is unique. It still blows, though, and watching their music videos makes me want to rip my own eyes out. Not really sure what I’m getting at here… I promise I don’t have any Brokencyde posters in my room. Crap.

Anyway, I hope none of you actually downloaded their album If you did, I’d like to make up for it.

The latest Deftones album, “Diamond Eyes”, made its way onto the web. It actually leaked about a week ago.

I’m pretty impressed with it… I like it a lot more than their last album, ““Saturday Night Wrist”. My favorite tracks so far are “Royal”, Beauty School”, “Sextape”, and “Risk”.

Brokencyde – The Songbirds of our Generation?

I think I may have posted about the band Brokencyde in the past, and I may have even spoken negatively of them. Allow me to redeem myself.

Brokencyde is classified as “crunkcore”, and some would say that they’re the forefathers of this wonderful blend of techno, screamo, and club hip-hop.

The track “Bree Bree” was my introduction to crunkcore. The first time that I heard this genre, I was overwhelmed. The sound is so creative and unique… It was unlike anything I had ever heard before. My immediate reaction was to push it away… As humans, we do tend to criticize that which we don’t understand.

Subsequent listens allowed me to really develop a taste for this genre, and appreciate the intricacies that I had initially overlooked. Over time, I realized how special Brokencyde really was.

I wanted to take a moment to share their latest album with you. “I’m Not a Fan but the Kids Like It” is the long-awaited followup to their “BC13 EP”, and they definitely don’t disappoint.

Instead of writing a long-winded, Pitchfork-esque review, I’d like to allow the music to speak for itself. Here’s the latest video from this revolutionary ensemble, for their song “Freaxxx”. Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life.

If you feel overwhelmed by the beauty of this piece, you’re not alone. I’d encourage you to give the song a second listen to let it really soak in.

I struggle with referring to Brokencyde as “artists”. I’d rather call them warrior poets. I see them as soldiers in a battle against the tyranny of unmixed genres. Listen as they herald in a new generation of blended greatness that not even Jamba Juice can claim.

This album changed my life, and its only right that I do my part to share it with the rest of the world. Enjoy.

The new Coheed and Cambria album, “Year of the Black Rainbow” has found it’s way onto the web. Listening to it for the first time right now, and I think I like it… Will need to listen again to know for sure, but it sounds good so far. You can download it here. I’ve seen these guys 3 or 4 times before, but definitely excited to see them again at Coachella.

Die Antwoord – Enter The Ninja

What is Die Antwoord? I’m not gonna explain that to you, I’ll leave that up to boingboing.net. But be sure to check out this video. I think I like that, though I’m not 100% sure. It may require subsequent viewings to really determine if I liked it or hated it. I did like the cameos from the group’s DJ, “DJ Leon Botha”, who is apparently the world’s oldest survivor of Progeria.

Actually, before watching this video, the only Progeria victim (is it pc to word it that way?) that I was aware of was this “juggalo” who made a series of YouTube videos and then disappeared from the spotlight.

“Shadows Between the Sky” is Buckethead’s 29th studio album. This is more mellow and in the vein of Colma and Electric Tears, but the technical guitar playing that you know and love is still there. I’m listening to it right now and really enjoying it.

Download The New Coheed & Cambria Single, “The Broken”

“The Broken” is the first single from Coheed & Cambria’s upcoming album, “Year of the Black Rainbow”. This album acts as a prequel to the storyline (which I haven’t really followed… I don’t get that into it) and is apparently going to be the last album. “Year of the Rainbow” will be their fifth studio album and is scheduled to be released on April 13th, 2010. I wasn’t a big fan of “No World For Tomorrow” (their last album), but I’m definitely willing to give this album a shot. I’ve only listened to the single once, but it sounds alright – Might take a few more listens to decide if I really like it or not. You can download it here:

Coheed and Cambria – The Broken

While on the topic of music… Have you heard about the “My Way Killings” in the Philippines? Apparently there has been at least half a dozen killings over the last decade after people sang Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” at karaoke bars. What is it about this particular song that would send someone into a murderous rage? Also… Is this notable? Or do people get killed at the drop of a hat in the Philippines anyway?
